What is the best position for massage on a bed?

The ideal location for a massage on a massage bed usually depends on the kind of massage one may want to give or the level of comfort one maybe in when receiving it. However, a common position for a full-body massage is as follows:

Supine (Face-Up) Position: The most common beginning of a massage is lying on your back. They lie on their back, head supported by a pillow, arms relaxed, and legs parted moderately. It suits best for workouts of the neck, shoulders, chest, arms and legs.

As the massage progresses, the therapist and client may transition to other positions to address specific areas, such as:

  1. Prone (Face-Down) Position: On this side, the patient lies down, supported by pillows. It is usually used to massage the sides of the body, such as hips, waists and shoulders.
  2. Side-Lying Position: The client lies on their side with pillows for support. This position is often used to work on the sides of the body, including the hips, waist, and shoulders.
  3. Sitting Position:  The client may take off almost any item except the bra or undershirt for chair massage or work on the upper part of the body whereby they can use an edge of the bed while standing with straight back that offers neck shoulder and upper back access.

It’s important that client feels at ease in every position and therapist gets quick access to problem-areas. In this regard, it is crucial for there to be communication between the client and therapist so that they can customize the massage as per client’s needs and desires. Moreover, employing cushions and pillows increases convenience and assists in holding a good posture while massaging.
